Investing in Art

Do you want to turn to the Art market?
Art is tangible.
Some paintings are definitely nicer than securities.
Ignoring the
financial markets in turmoil, art is an alternative asset class
that has been incorporated into portfolios in the interest of
diversification.
The volatility,
irrationality and illiquidity of the art market make it hard to
compare to more conventional investments. The paper will look at
how investors are treating art as an asset class and how art
compares to more traditional assets such as equities and bonds.
Art is a
long-term
investment: You can not resell paintings quickly at a profit.
According to David Darst, chief investment strategist of Morgan
Stanley’s Individual Investor Group "Trading volume in art is very
low. There is a small group of people who buy art to sell, but
most buy to hold."
There
are
very few art investment funds.
A good one is the London-based
Fine Art Fund,
which has a minimum investment of £140,000. Or, the
Andipa Gallery in London
that offers several investment portfolios that typically start at
£250,000.
"We see a lot of people investing money in art that they would
otherwise have invested in a pension fund. But what few people
realise is that with the right advice they can buy modern masters,
from Picasso to Hirst, from a few thousand pounds." said gallery
owner Acoris Andipa.
